Five million Americans are living with heart failure and over 500,000 people are diagnosed each year. While medications, cardiac rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes help many, some patients require mechanical support. Ventricular assist devices (VAD’s) provide mechanical support to patients. This patient population is increasing as advances in technology allow heart failure patients to return to a full life. This course reviews Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD’s) and the role of the EMS responding to these patients. The course outline is as follows: Left, Right and biventricular support devices, emergencies, alarms and cardiac arrest in VAD patients.
This course is for the BLS & ALS Provider.
