Seizures and syncope are common calls for service for EMS. While these disorders are separate they may overlap. This course will review the types of seizures and appropriate treatment, as well as syncope pathology and treatment. Epilepsy is a term that covers a range of brain disorders that cause seizures. There are different types of epilepsy just as there are different types of seizures. Syncope (fainting) is a sudden but temporary loss of consciousness caused by an interruption of blood flow to the brain. Syncope is associated with an inability to maintain postural tone in other words you fall down. These two disorders have frequent overlap in EMS and this course reviews both, including differentiation between seizures and syncope.
